What Do Amphibian Bellies and Human Fingerprints Have in Common?
27. September, 2024,09:00 - 15:00

We will present a method for determining the identity of amphibians using photographs: based on the belly patterns of fire-bellied toads or newts, we can recognize each individual—just as fingerprints allow us to identify every human. Sometimes this is quite easy, as fire-bellied toads have a very distinctive pattern of black and yellow spots on their bellies; at other times it is more difficult, and researchers need to rely on various software tools. Participants will be able to discover this themselves through the engaging game “Bela Urška.”
Why do we do this at all? By using marking and photo-identification, we can estimate the population size of endangered animal groups such as amphibians. In this way, we contribute to a better understanding of biodiversity, especially in the case of endangered species, since similar methods can also be used for other animal groups (e.g. beetles, butterflies). In the workshop, we will also discuss the causes of species endangerment.
