Lingua Franca Through the Centuries and in the Modern Era
22. April,12:40 - 14:30

The workshop is based on dialogue between students and the lecturer and is aimed at deepening young people’s linguistic way of thinking through an exploration of the phenomenon of the lingua franca throughout history and in the modern era.
In the initial phase of the workshop, students are introduced to the concept through the lecturer’s guiding questions. They then independently or in pairs, following the lecturer’s instructions and using online resources, research examples of European languages that played the role of a lingua franca in different historical periods. They also identify the reasons why a particular language assumes the function of a universal code for international or intercultural communication across all levels of interaction, linguistic registers, and domains of everyday life.
After watching a short thematic video, a brief discussion follows on how and to what extent a lingua franca influences the development of an individual speaker’s identity, as well as the formation of collective identity or cultural awareness in a global sense.
At the end of the workshop, the lecturer connects the concept of the lingua franca with the concept of artificial zonal or international auxiliary languages.
The workshop is strongly practice-oriented while simultaneously encouraging students to perceive language(s) from a broader perspective.
