Interactive Workshop: The Lives of the Romans Through the Exploration of Archaeological Finds
23. April,09:30 - 12:30

The sheltered area of Simon’s Bay attracted wealthy Romans as early as 2,000 years ago, leading them to build a large harbor and a luxurious Roman seaside villa nearby. Today, the remains of this villa can be seen as part of the Simon’s Bay Archaeological Park. During a guided walk through the park, participants will learn about the villa and some of its characteristic rooms, become familiar with the site’s fate after the villa’s decline, and gain insight into both the charms and challenges of archaeological work.
Through examples of various archaeological finds, we will see what conclusions archaeologists can draw about life in the Roman period. What can objects such as a fragment of a glass bowl, a statuette of Victoria, a terra sigillata cup, a brick, or a stylus “tell” us?
During the visit, pupils also receive an educational workbook, which they complete with the help of clues and take home with them. By filling it in, they learn many additional interesting facts about the villa and about the lives of the Romans who lived there.
