Critial understanding of the media content – workshop for senior citizens
18. November, 2024 - 26. November, 2024

The media literacy workshop will provide participants with knowledge for a conceptual understanding of media content, particularly news. For the analysis of news, we will use the model developed by Kellner and Share (2019). The aim is for participants to identify viewpoints, genres, and patterns of media news presentation, as well as to recognize propaganda, censorship, and bias in news reporting.
The group of older adults is assumed to have lower levels of media literacy. While they regularly follow traditional media, they are often less skilled in using computers and mobile digital devices. They are also a potentially vulnerable group exposed to online abuse. The purpose of the research is to obtain information about users’ media consumption habits in authentic everyday-life conditions, their ability to critically evaluate media content and recognize fake news, and the influence of sociodemographic variables on the choice of information sources and the critical understanding of media content. The workshop will demonstrate how exposed older adults are to fake news, despite already having a partially developed critical attitude toward information and other media content due to their life experience.
