SUMMARY:Critial understanding of the media content - workshop for senior citizens
DESCRIPTION:The media literacy workshop will provide participants with knowledge for a conceptual understanding of media content\, particularly news. For the analysis of news\, we will use the model developed by Kellner and Share (2019). The aim is for participants to identify viewpoints\, genres\, and patterns of media news presentation\, as well as to recognize propaganda\, censorship\, and bias in news reporting. \n\nThe group of older adults is assumed to have lower levels of media literacy. While they regularly follow traditional media\, they are often less skilled in using computers and mobile digital devices. They are also a potentially vulnerable group exposed to online abuse. The purpose of the research is to obtain information about users’ media consumption habits in authentic everyday-life conditions\, their ability to critically evaluate media content and recognize fake news\, and the influence of sociodemographic variables on the choice of information sources and the critical understanding of media content. The workshop will demonstrate how exposed older adults are to fake news\, despite already having a partially developed critical attitude toward information and other media content due to their life experience. \n\n\nFurther below\, you are kindly invited to read and view the following materials related to the event: \n\nThe invitation with the program is available at this link.\nPhotos from the event:

SUMMARY:Excursions into the Mathematical Universe: To Infinity and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:A series of popular science lectures titled “Excursions into the Mathematical Universe.” The lectures are primarily intended for students of secondary schools in the Primorska region\, but they are also open to the general public. Researchers and university lecturers will present ancient and modern mathematical concepts and their applications in various fields of science\, natural sciences\, and social sciences in an accessible way. \n\nTo Infinity and Beyond \nWe can all agree that the concept of infinity plays an important role in our society and our own philosophy\, but what exactly is “infinity”? In this talk\, we will uncover the definition of infinity as used in mathematics and delve into some of its forms and consequences. From showing that there are several infinities to partitioning a pea and reassembling it to create the sun\, mathematical infinity has many interesting properties\, some of which may be counterintuitive or paradoxical. \nAt the end of the 19th century\, mathematicians were bewildered by the emergence of paradoxical results\, leading to a foundational crisis in mathematics. In an attempt to resolve these issues\, Hilbert proposed his famous program (Hilbert’s program) in 1920\, aiming to formalize all of mathematics on a solid foundation. However\, this program was shown to be unattainable by Gödel’s results published in 1931. In the second part of the talk\, we will focus on explaining how it can be shown that certain (mathematical) statements can be neither proven nor disproven using the common foundational rules of mathematics. \nAbout the lecturer: René Rodríguez Aldama was born in 1994 in La Piedad\, Michoacán\, Mexico. In 2016\, he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from the Michoacán University of Saint Nicholas of Hidalgo (UMSNH)\, Morelia\, Mexico. Two years later\, he completed a master’s degree in pure mathematics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and UMSNH\, where his mathematical interests included set theory\, logic\, and topology. In 2022\, he obtained a PhD in mathematics from the University of Primorska. Since 2022\, he has been a researcher at the Faculty of Mathematics\, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies and at the Andrej Marušič Institute. His current research interests include algebra\, coding theory\, combinatorics\, and cryptology. \n(The lecture will be held in English.) \n\n\nFurther below\, you are kindly invited to read and view the following materials related to the event: \n\nThe invitation with the program is available at this link.\nEvent materials are available at this link.\nA recording of the event is available at this link.\nPhotos from the event:

SUMMARY:Conversations with UP Alumni: Connecting Science with Everyday Life | UP FM – Current Geopolitical Developments in the World
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, November 28\, at 6:00 PM\, a meeting with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Primož Šterbenc and Simona Simonovič\, MSc in Political Science\, will take place in Lecture Room 3 at the Faculty of Management. \n\nToday\, we are living in a specific period of international relations\, marked by a transition from a unipolar global order (a single superpower) to a multipolar one (several major powers). Such periods are generally unstable and potentially dangerous. The fundamental context of contemporary international relations is the competition between the United States of America and the People’s Republic of China for global leadership\, which could lead to a conflict between a “ruling power” and a “rising power\,” as warned by the renowned Athenian historian Thucydides. The greatest risks are associated with the South China Sea and\, in particular\, Taiwan. Washington and Beijing are seeking to improve their geostrategic positions through various projects and alliances\, with China’s Belt and Road Initiative being the most important among them. From this perspective\, the turbulent developments in Ukraine and the Middle East must also be interpreted. \n\n\n\n\nEvents organised by the Alumni Office team\, involving alumni and professors from specific faculties\, aiming to create a dynamic environment for meaningful discussions on contemporary and relevant topics\, including fake news and conspiracy theories. The six sessions will take place throughout the year\, with a moderator leading a structured discussion at each session\, after which we will open the floor for questions from the audience and further informal conversation over a reception to follow. \n\nFurther below\, you are kindly invited to read and view the following materials related to the event: \n\nThe invitation with the program is available at this link.\nPhotos from the event:

SUMMARY:Chatting with Ana Vovk in the rhythm of nature: New biodynamics - why do we need it?
DESCRIPTION:In addition to organic farming\, we also know biodynamic farming which differs from the organic in that it involves cosmic forces. Dr. Rudolf Steiner was the founder of biodynamics\, whose work was continued by Marija Thun. Today\, as the land/soil is dying much faster than ever before\, we need a new biodynamic which includes only plant preparations instead of animal components and is suitable for a wider range of users.

SUMMARY:Excursions into the Mathematical Universe: How Mathematics Shapes the Digital World: From Computer Games and Secure Online Shopping to Social Networks
DESCRIPTION:A series of popular science lectures titled “Excursions into the Mathematical Universe.” The lectures are primarily intended for students of secondary schools in the Primorska region\, but they are also open to the general public. Researchers and university lecturers will present ancient and modern mathematical concepts and their applicability in various fields of science\, natural sciences\, and social sciences in an accessible way. \n\nHow Mathematics Shapes the Digital World: From Computer Games and Secure Online Shopping to Social Networks \nHow do 3D models in video games move and rotate? How does your password turn into an incomprehensible string of characters? And how can we determine who is the most influential person on a social network? The answer lies in linear algebra. In this lecture\, we will explore how simple mathematical operations on vectors make all of this possible. \nAbout the lecturer: Safet Penjić was born in Zenica (Bosnia and Herzegovina)\, where he completed primary and secondary school. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Zenica and his master’s studies at the University of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). He earned his PhD in 2019 at the Faculty of Mathematics\, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies\, University of Primorska\, Koper. SUMMARY:Fake News and Conspiracy Theories: How to Fight Them and Protect Gender Equality?
DESCRIPTION:“Raising awareness of the interested public through presentations on fake news and conspiracy theories in the field of gender equality: Despite technological and social progress\, even in the field of gender equality\, fake news and conspiracy theories exist. Based on their characteristics\, fake news can be classified into several subgroups\, such as: false information\, which refers to inaccurate information or manipulated truth with the aim of creating sensational stories; bias\, which refers to the fact that people will prefer to share and believe fake news that is consistent with their beliefs and biases; the spread of false information through the platform\, with the help of which the information spreads faster; manipulation through which the creators of false information only want to spread it for various reasons such as political goals\, financial gain or entertainment. \nAs a well-known example\, we can take the difference in pay for the same work between men and women\, many still deny this fact and do not attach any special importance to it. In the field of science\, there is often misinformation or stereotypes about what men and women can do\, or what abilities one group and another have. Stereotypical claims are also often seen in the fields of technology\, mechanical engineering\, computer engineering and mathematics. Some misinformation often tries to relativize and minimize the magnitude of the problem of violence against women or falsely state that most allegations are false\, even though research indicates that the proportion of false allegations in cases of sexual violence is relatively low. \nWe can still find news stories and messages from celebrities stating that feminism is part of a global conspiracy to devalue traditional values and the family and place men in a subordinate position. We also witness in many cases when they use conspiracy theories to try to convince others that feminism is hostile to men and promotes the dominance of one gender over the other. That is why it is important to recognize fake news and conspiracy theories and to be able to check the source of the information\, or to find out where the information is coming from and if we have found it within a credible source that supports or refutes the stated facts. \n\nVarious research projects dealing with gender equality and equal opportunities can play an important role in raising awareness. In particular\, we will present the AGRIGEP project within the framework of Horizon Europe\, which aims to inform the general public about the importance and benefits of research in the field of gender equality. \n\n\nFurther below\, you are kindly invited to read and view the following materials related to the event: \n\n\nThe invitation with the program is available at this link.\nAwareness-raising leaflets are available at this link.\nPhotos from the event:

SUMMARY:Excursions into the Mathematical Universe: Rumors\, Epidemics and Economic Crises: Infection Processes in Networks
\n\nRumors\, Epidemics and Economic Crises: Infection Processes in Networks \nWhat are the commonalities between the economic crisis of 2008\, the COVID-19 pandemic\, and social media campaigns in recent political elections? Why were the dynamics of bankruptcies\, epidemic outbreaks\, and the spread of misinformation so unexpected? What are the similarities and differences between these processes\, and how can they be described using mathematical models? What specific problems arise in controlling the spread of such outbreaks\, and what mathematical methods can be used to address them? In this lecture\, we will take a journey through the methodology of computational network analysis to answer these questions and highlight the main challenges. \nAbout the lecturer: Miklós Krész earned his PhD in mathematics and computer science in 2005 at the University of Szeged\, Hungary. His main research areas include industrially motivated optimization methods\, data-driven industrial solutions\, and the integration of operations research and data methodologies. He focuses on both fundamental and applied research in these areas. SUMMARY:Excursions into the Mathematical Universe: Some Classical Results from Graph Theory
\n\nSome Classical Results from Graph Theory \nGraph theory is a mathematical discipline that deals with the study of networks\, that is\, objects consisting of “vertices” and the connections between them. In this lecture\, we will first define the concept of a graph and introduce some related concepts and definitions. In the continuation of the lecture\, we will present some classical results from graph theory concerning Eulerian traversals of graphs\, Hamiltonian paths of graphs\, matchings in graphs\, and more. Some of these results will also be proved. \nAbout the lecturer: Štefko Miklavič completed his master’s degree in 2002 and earned his PhD in 2004 at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics in Ljubljana. His research primarily focuses on graph theory and algebraic combinatorics. As an assistant and lecturer\, he has collaborated with the Polytechnic (now the University) of Nova Gorica and the Faculty of Education in Koper. In 2007\, as a Fulbright scholar\, he conducted research for six months at the University of Wisconsin (USA). From 2010 to 2011\, he served as Director of the UP Andrej Marušič Institute\, and from November 2011 to December 2015\, he was Vice-Rector for Research and Development at the University of Primorska. \n\n\nFurther below\, you are kindly invited to read and view the following materials related to the event: \n\nThe invitation with the program is available at this link.\nEvent materials are available at this link.\nA recording of the event is available at this link.\nPhotos from the event:

SUMMARY:Critical Understanding of Media Content
DESCRIPTION:The media critical analysis workshop will provide participants with knowledge for a conceptual understanding of media content. The aim is to identify viewpoints\, genres\, and patterns of media presentation\, and to detect propaganda\, censorship\, and bias within content. The group of young people aged 12 to 15 is assumed to have insufficient media literacy; however\, they are more skilled in using mobile digital devices and can create some media content and share it with other users. At the same time\, they access content uncritically and are therefore a potentially vulnerable group exposed to fake news and online abuse. The workshop will demonstrate how exposed they are to fake news and teach them how to develop a critical attitude toward information and other media content. \n\nImplementation for pupils and teachers of Anton Ukmar Primary School Koper. \n\nPresentation for teachers\, April 7\, 2025\nWorkshop implementation\, April 7–11\, 2025\nPresentation of results\, September 26\, 2025\n\n\n\nFurther below\, you are kindly invited to read and view the following materials related to the event: \n\nThe invitation with the program is available at this link.\nEvent materials are available at this link.\nPhotos from the event:

SUMMARY:Excursions into the Mathematical Universe: Tracing Fingerprints with Graph Theory
\n\nTracing Fingerprints with Graph Theory \nThe use of fingerprints for personal identification began with Henry Faulds in 1880. Just eight years later\, it was established that the probability of two fingerprints from different individuals being identical is only 1 in 64 billion. Consequently\, the use of fingerprints is still very widespread today\, especially in forensic science. Modern fingerprint recognition relies on computer algorithms and patterns in databases\, where knowledge of graph theory—particularly graph isomorphism—is of great help. In this lecture\, we will briefly become familiar with some basics of graph theory and then with certain characteristic fingerprint patterns. Finally\, we will learn about a simple algorithm for fingerprint recognition. \nAbout the lecturer: Kenny Štorgel obtained his PhD in mathematical sciences in 2023 in the field of graph theory. He is currently employed at the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo mesto and at the University of Primorska\, Faculty of Mathematics\, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies. His research work focuses mainly on graph theory\, especially algorithmic\, chromatic\, and structural graph theory. As part of his work\, he is also active in other areas related to computer science. \n\n\nFurther below\, you are kindly invited to read and view the following materials related to the event: \n\nThe invitation with the program is available at this link.\nEvent materials are available at this link.\nA recording of the event is available at this link.\nPhotos from the event:

SUMMARY:What Is My Body Capable Of?
DESCRIPTION:The workshop will consist of three different movement challenges and a few myths about our body. \n\nSitting in a circle: each pupil sits on another pupil’s knees in such a way that they form a circle. If the pupils arrange themselves appropriately\, they will be able to sit on each other’s knees while at the same time supporting the person in front of them. \nA thinking game with the number of legs and arms on the ground. For example\, if we have a group of 10 pupils\, the instruction is that there must be 10 hands and 10 feet on the ground. The pupils arrange themselves in a way that meets the instructions. The number of legs and arms can then be changed freely. \nRelay with a ball: the group is divided into two teams. The teams line up. Various ball-passing games follow\, for example passing the ball between the legs and back over the head. \nMyths: Can you lick your elbow with your tongue? Can you lick your nose with your tongue? When can I overcome a heavier load? When I perform an exercise using both arms/legs (with both arms or legs at the same time)\, or if I add together the load I can overcome with my left arm/leg and my right arm/leg?

SUMMARY:Proprioceptive Training
DESCRIPTION:Participants will receive a short introductory lecture where they will learn about the importance of proprioception and trunk stabilization in everyday movement and rehabilitation. We will present how our body perceives its position in space and why this is important for balance\, sports\, and recovery after injuries. This will be followed by a practical demonstration of using a laser device for training cervical proprioception. Participants will learn how a laser mounted on the head provides feedback on neck movement control and improves the sense of orientation. They will also be able to try the device themselves through an engaging challenge: tracing letters and shapes with a laser placed on top of the head. \nNext\, we will demonstrate the use of a biofeedback unit for trunk stabilization\, through which individuals train the correct activation of deep abdominal muscles. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a practical test\, where they will use a sensor to try to maintain optimal pressure while activating the muscles. At the end\, a short discussion will follow on the role of these technologies in physiotherapy and sports training\, with participants encouraged to actively participate and ask questions.

SUMMARY:Learning Statistics Through Play
DESCRIPTION:In the workshop\, we will use games and examples through which children will learn the basics of statistics and acquire basic skills for data analysis. The workshop is intended for primary school pupils\, who will engage with the data cycle: they will formulate a research question on the basis of which they will collect data\, describe the sample\, analyze the data using basic statistical methods\, and summarize the results. The aim of the workshop is to encourage children’s curiosity about the world around them by using data in a fun and interactive way.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Detective: Revealing the Invisible Wildlife Around You
DESCRIPTION:As part of the activity “Wildlife Detective: Revealing the Invisible Wildlife Around You\,” pupils and teachers will be introduced to innovative approaches to monitoring biodiversity using modern genetic methods. These methods enable the understanding and investigation of numerous animal characteristics (what they feed on\, the environment they live in\, whether their populations in nature are stable\, the extent of their resistance to diseases\, how to identify overall biodiversity in a single reaction\, etc.). Pupils and teachers will also learn the basics of field research\, namely how to obtain appropriate genetic samples from the environment (environmental DNA) or from animals (e.g. collecting hair\, droppings\, and other animal traces)\, which make it possible to obtain a wide range of data important for the conservation\, management\, and understanding of animal characteristics. Participants will also take part in so-called eDNA bingo\, which was developed within the larger international project Biodiversity Genomics Europe. The goal of the interactive game will be to identify invisible organisms based on DNA sequences that we will “find” in our samples.
