DESCRIPTION:A series of popular science lectures titled “Excursions into the Mathematical Universe.” The lectures are primarily intended for students of secondary schools in the Primorska region\, but they are also open to the general public. Researchers and university lecturers will present ancient and modern mathematical concepts and their applicability in various fields of science\, natural sciences\, and social sciences in an accessible way. \n\nRumors\, Epidemics and Economic Crises: Infection Processes in Networks \nWhat are the commonalities between the economic crisis of 2008\, the COVID-19 pandemic\, and social media campaigns in recent political elections? Why were the dynamics of bankruptcies\, epidemic outbreaks\, and the spread of misinformation so unexpected? What are the similarities and differences between these processes\, and how can they be described using mathematical models? What specific problems arise in controlling the spread of such outbreaks\, and what mathematical methods can be used to address them? In this lecture\, we will take a journey through the methodology of computational network analysis to answer these questions and highlight the main challenges. \nAbout the lecturer: Miklós Krész earned his PhD in mathematics and computer science in 2005 at the University of Szeged\, Hungary. His main research areas include industrially motivated optimization methods\, data-driven industrial solutions\, and the integration of operations research and data methodologies. He focuses on both fundamental and applied research in these areas. SUMMARY:Excursions into the Mathematical Universe: Some Classical Results from Graph Theory
DESCRIPTION:A series of popular science lectures titled “Excursions into the Mathematical Universe.” The lectures are primarily intended for students of secondary schools in the Primorska region\, but they are also open to the general public. Researchers and university lecturers will present ancient and modern mathematical concepts and their applicability in various fields of science\, natural sciences\, and social sciences in an accessible way. \n\nSome Classical Results from Graph Theory \nGraph theory is a mathematical discipline that deals with the study of networks\, that is\, objects consisting of “vertices” and the connections between them. In this lecture\, we will first define the concept of a graph and introduce some related concepts and definitions. In the continuation of the lecture\, we will present some classical results from graph theory concerning Eulerian traversals of graphs\, Hamiltonian paths of graphs\, matchings in graphs\, and more. Some of these results will also be proved. \nAbout the lecturer: Štefko Miklavič completed his master’s degree in 2002 and earned his PhD in 2004 at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics in Ljubljana. His research primarily focuses on graph theory and algebraic combinatorics. As an assistant and lecturer\, he has collaborated with the Polytechnic (now the University) of Nova Gorica and the Faculty of Education in Koper. In 2007\, as a Fulbright scholar\, he conducted research for six months at the University of Wisconsin (USA). The aim is to identify viewpoints\, genres\, and patterns of media presentation\, and to detect propaganda\, censorship\, and bias within content. The group of young people aged 12 to 15 is assumed to have insufficient media literacy; however\, they are more skilled in using mobile digital devices and can create some media content and share it with other users. At the same time\, they access content uncritically and are therefore a potentially vulnerable group exposed to fake news and online abuse. Researchers and university lecturers will present ancient and modern mathematical concepts and their applicability in various fields of science\, natural sciences\, and social sciences in an accessible way. \n\nTracing Fingerprints with Graph Theory \nThe use of fingerprints for personal identification began with Henry Faulds in 1880. Just eight years later\, it was established that the probability of two fingerprints from different individuals being identical is only 1 in 64 billion. Consequently\, the use of fingerprints is still very widespread today\, especially in forensic science. Modern fingerprint recognition relies on computer algorithms and patterns in databases\, where knowledge of graph theory—particularly graph isomorphism—is of great help. In this lecture\, we will briefly become familiar with some basics of graph theory and then with certain characteristic fingerprint patterns. Finally\, we will learn about a simple algorithm for fingerprint recognition. \nAbout the lecturer: Kenny Štorgel obtained his PhD in mathematical sciences in 2023 in the field of graph theory. He is currently employed at the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo mesto and at the University of Primorska\, Faculty of Mathematics\, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies. His research work focuses mainly on graph theory\, especially algorithmic\, chromatic\, and structural graph theory. SUMMARY:Fake News and Conspiracy Theories: How to Fight Them and Protect Gender Equality?
DESCRIPTION:“Raising awareness of the interested public through presentations on fake news and conspiracy theories in the field of gender equality: Despite technological and social progress\, even in the field of gender equality\, fake news and conspiracy theories exist. Based on their characteristics\, fake news can be classified into several subgroups\, such as: false information\, which refers to inaccurate information or manipulated truth with the aim of creating sensational stories; bias\, which refers to the fact that people will prefer to share and believe fake news that is consistent with their beliefs and biases; the spread of false information through the platform\, with the help of which the information spreads faster; manipulation through which the creators of false information only want to spread it for various reasons such as political goals\, financial gain or entertainment. \nAs a well-known example\, we can take the difference in pay for the same work between men and women\, many still deny this fact and do not attach any special importance to it. In the field of science\, there is often misinformation or stereotypes about what men and women can do\, or what abilities one group and another have. Stereotypical claims are also often seen in the fields of technology\, mechanical engineering\, computer engineering and mathematics. Some misinformation often tries to relativize and minimize the magnitude of the problem of violence against women or falsely state that most allegations are false\, even though research indicates that the proportion of false allegations in cases of sexual violence is relatively low. \nWe can still find news stories and messages from celebrities stating that feminism is part of a global conspiracy to devalue traditional values and the family and place men in a subordinate position. We also witness in many cases when they use conspiracy theories to try to convince others that feminism is hostile to men and promotes the dominance of one gender over the other. That is why it is important to recognize fake news and conspiracy theories and to be able to check the source of the information\, or to find out where the information is coming from and if we have found it within a credible source that supports or refutes the stated facts. \n\nVarious research projects dealing with gender equality and equal opportunities can play an important role in raising awareness. Researchers and university lecturers will present ancient and modern mathematical concepts and their applicability in various fields of science\, natural sciences\, and social sciences in an accessible way. \n\nThe Role of Dice in World Domination – A Case Study of Risk: The Board Game \nBoard games have been an integral part of human history across cultures and societies\, and the theory and strategies of traditional games such as Chess and Go have long been studied and analyzed. In this talk\, we explore the mathematical mechanics behind a much more recent—though a classic by modern standards—board game: Risk. We will show how game states can be represented and how transitions between these states can be described with the help of probability theory\, more specifically\, Markov chains. \nAbout the lecturer: Balázs Dávid received his PhD in computer science in 2018 at the University of Szeged\, Hungary. His research areas include combinatorial optimization\, mathematical programming\, and algorithm development\, particularly in public transport and logistics. His main research interest is the modeling and optimization of problems motivated by real-life industrial applications. DESCRIPTION:A series of popular science lectures titled “Excursions into the Mathematical Universe.” The lectures are primarily intended for students of secondary schools in the Primorska region\, but they are also open to the general public. Researchers and university lecturers will present ancient and modern mathematical concepts and their applicability in various fields of science\, natural sciences\, and social sciences in an accessible way. \n\nMatchings in Graphs\, from Stable Marriages to Blooming \nSuppose we have six gifts that we would like to distribute among five friends. Can we give one gift to each friend in such a way that everyone receives something they will be happy with? This is an example of a problem where matchings can help us if we model it using graphs. In this lecture\, we will look at what a graph is\, what a matching in a graph is\, how we can efficiently find one (if it exists at all)\, and some other problems that can be solved using matchings. \nAbout the lecturer: Nina Chiarelli graduated in 2011 from the Faculty of Education in Koper in the field of mathematics and computer science and earned her PhD in mathematical sciences in 2016 at UP FAMNIT. She has been employed at UP FAMNIT since 2014\, first as an assistant and later as an assistant professor. Since 2017\, she has also been employed as a researcher at UP IAM. SUMMARY:Excursions into the Mathematical Universe: The Essentials of Primality Testing
DESCRIPTION:A series of popular science lectures titled “Excursions into the Mathematical Universe.” The lectures are primarily intended for students of secondary schools in the Primorska region\, but they are also open to the general public. Researchers and university lecturers will present ancient and modern mathematical concepts and their applicability in various fields of science\, natural sciences\, and social sciences in an accessible way. \n\nThe Essentials of Primality Testing \nImagine that you have to determine whether a given one-hundred-digit odd natural number is prime. This task may sound like a bad joke in a mathematics class\, but the answer is crucial for modern cryptography. A straightforward procedure would be to check\, for every natural number ddd greater than 1 and less than the square root of the given number nnn\, whether ddd divides nnn. This would require approximately 105010^{50}1050 division operations. Even if each such operation took only 1 nanosecond\, we would be waiting for the answer for about 103310^{33}1033 years\, which makes this approach inefficient. \nAn efficient procedure (or algorithm) is one that requires p(log⁡n)p(\log n)p(logn) operations\, where p(x)p(x)p(x) is a polynomial. Fortunately\, in practice there exist very fast probabilistic algorithms\, such as the Miller–Rabin test\, which determine with high probability whether a number is prime. In this lecture\, we will look at some of these procedures and the basic ideas behind them. \nAbout the lecturer: Aleksander Simonič earned his PhD in analytic number theory in 2022 at the University of New South Wales (Australia). After completing his doctorate\, he worked there as a researcher and lecturer\, teaching various mathematics courses to students of the Australian Defence Force Academy. He is currently employed as an assistant at the Faculty of Mathematics\, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies of the University of Primorska\, where his research focuses on L-functions and where he teaches two number-theory courses. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, November 28\, at 6:00 PM\, a meeting with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Primož Šterbenc and Simona Simonovič\, MSc in Political Science\, will take place in Lecture Room 3 at the Faculty of Management. \n\nToday\, we are living in a specific period of international relations\, marked by a transition from a unipolar global order (a single superpower) to a multipolar one (several major powers). Such periods are generally unstable and potentially dangerous. The fundamental context of contemporary international relations is the competition between the United States of America and the People’s Republic of China for global leadership\, which could lead to a conflict between a “ruling power” and a “rising power\,” as warned by the renowned Athenian historian Thucydides. The greatest risks are associated with the South China Sea and\, in particular\, Taiwan. Washington and Beijing are seeking to improve their geostrategic positions through various projects and alliances\, with China’s Belt and Road Initiative being the most important among them. DESCRIPTION:Our guests will be this year’s Alumni UP Award recipients\, who translate academic knowledge into practice through their work and\, with innovative approaches in the fields of health\, sustainability\, sports\, culture\, and entrepreneurship\, help create a better future for all of us. The event offers an opportunity for networking\, intergenerational exchange of experiences\, personal growth\, and the creation of new\, inspiring collaborations. After the official part of the event\, the gathering and conversation with the guests will continue over light refreshments. \nBorut Jerman is a graduate in cultural studies and a social anthropologist who\, as President of the Cultural and Educational Association PiNA\, has for many years been active at the intersection of culture\, education\, participation\, and social development. Under his leadership\, PiNA has grown into one of the most recognizable non-governmental organizations in Slovenia in the field of cultural and social projects. He has also contributed to the development of the cultural scene in Slovenian Istria\, among other roles as a collaborator and producer of various cultural events and festivals. \nIza Resnik Strozak is a graduate of UP FAMNIT who demonstrated research maturity already during her studies. Today\, as a member of the management team at MM Količevo\, she leads transformations in quality\, environmental standards\, and sustainability strategies within a complex manufacturing environment. Through her contributions to quality and environmental improvements in the production of cartonboard from virgin and recycled fibers\, she embodies a sustainability-oriented mindset and innovative thinking. She represents a role model of an internationally oriented and socially responsible professional. \nLuka Mužina is a doctoral student and holds a Master’s degree in Physiotherapy. He began his academic journey at UP FVZ\, where he has been working as a teaching assistant since this year\, contributing to laboratory and seminar classes. Professionally\, he develops his career at the Respiratory Physiotherapy Unit at UKC Ljubljana\, where he has been employed full-time since 2023. He regularly presents professional insights in the field of respiratory physiotherapy at congresses and scientific meetings. \nMateja Hrvatin Kozlovič holds a Master’s degree from UP FTŠ Turistica. She began her entrepreneurial journey in tourism by founding the accommodation product Hiške slovenske Istre (Houses of Slovenian Istria)\, for which she received the Snovalec Award for the most innovative tourism ideas. Her contribution to connecting the local environment is further reflected in her role as the founder of the tourism cooperative Zakladi Istre (Treasures of Istria). She further deepened her understanding of the challenges of tourism and local economic development by entering local politics\, where she currently serves as Deputy Mayor of the City Municipality of Koper. \nLuka Kejžar\, while still a master’s student in the Applied Kinesiology program at UP FVZ in 2020\, took on the task of establishing Sport UP. As the main coordinator\, he co-created a free recreational program for the entire University of Primorska community\, including members of the Alumni Club. In the following years\, he expanded the range of sports activities and developed the initiative into a recognizable success story focused on fostering a passion for physical activity at the university level. During his tenure\, participation in Sport UP activities increased by more than threefold\, and the number of new activities\, workshops\, events\, and partnerships with the wider community continues to grow each year. \n\n\n\n\nEvents organised by the Alumni Office team\, involving alumni and professors from specific faculties\, aiming to create a dynamic environment for meaningful discussions on contemporary and relevant topics\, including fake news and conspiracy theories. SUMMARY:Lingua Franca Through the Centuries and in the Modern Era
DESCRIPTION:The workshop is based on dialogue between students and the lecturer and is aimed at deepening young people’s linguistic way of thinking through an exploration of the phenomenon of the lingua franca throughout history and in the modern era. \n\nIn the initial phase of the workshop\, students are introduced to the concept through the lecturer’s guiding questions. They then independently or in pairs\, following the lecturer’s instructions and using online resources\, research examples of European languages that played the role of a lingua franca in different historical periods. They also identify the reasons why a particular language assumes the function of a universal code for international or intercultural communication across all levels of interaction\, linguistic registers\, and domains of everyday life. \nAfter watching a short thematic video\, a brief discussion follows on how and to what extent a lingua franca influences the development of an individual speaker’s identity\, as well as the formation of collective identity or cultural awareness in a global sense. \nAt the end of the workshop\, the lecturer connects the concept of the lingua franca with the concept of artificial zonal or international auxiliary languages. \nThe workshop is strongly practice-oriented while simultaneously encouraging students to perceive language(s) from a broader perspective. \n\n\nFurther below\, you are kindly invited to read and view the following materials related to the event: \n\nThe invitation with the program is available at this link.\nPhotos from the event:

DESCRIPTION:A series of popular science lectures titled “Excursions into the Mathematical Universe.” The lectures are primarily intended for students of secondary schools in the Primorska region\, but they are also open to the general public. Researchers and university lecturers will present ancient and modern mathematical concepts and their applicability in various fields of science\, natural sciences\, and social sciences in an accessible way. \nThose who say maths has no colours have not met association schemes yet! When symmetry and regularity come into play together… \nSince the ancient determination of the five Platonic solids\, the study of symmetry and regularity has always been one of the most fascinating aspects of mathematics\, and even nowadays\, there are many challenging problems in this area. One intriguing phenomenon is that the arithmetical regularity properties of an object often imply both the uniqueness of the object and the existence of numerous symmetries. This interplay between symmetry and regularity forms the core of the present lecture. \nMathematically speaking\, graphs and association schemes easily interpret many symmetry and regularity properties\, mainly because the very nature of these peculiar mathematical tools makes them incredibly versatile\, convenient to use: association schemes can be roughly understood as special collections of coloured graphs\, i.e.\, nice structures made of “points” that are all connected via distinctly coloured “lines”. For instance\, if we consider a (regular) hexagon in a plane\, we can choose red to colour its perimeter\, green to colour its two inscribed triangles\, and blue to colour its three diagonals; in such a way\, we partition all edges in a hexagon (connecting every two vertices\, we get a complete graph with 15 edges) into three distinct colour classes and obtain an association scheme consisting of three coloured graphs: the red perimeter\, the green triangles\, and the blue diagonals. In light of this naive but very effective example\, we can imagine an association scheme to be a special colour palette for colouring sufficiently regular mathematical structures: association schemes\, by assigning colours\, can highlight the most beautiful aspects of a studied object\, i.e.\, the symmetries! Much more about the beauty of mathematical symmetries will be revealed during the lecture\, along with some curiosities on everyday life topics seen through the lens of association schemes. \nAbout the lecturer: Giusy Monzillo was born in March 1993 in Battipaglia\, Salerno\, Italy. She grad- uated in Mathematics from Università degli Studi della Basilicata (Unibas)\, Potenza\, Italy\, in February 2016. Giusy received her Master’s degree in Mathe- matics from Unibas in June 2018\, where her mathematical interests were Alge- bra and Geometry. She obtained her Ph.D. in Mathematics from Università del Salento\, Lecce\, Italy\, in June 2022. Since October 2022\, she has been a researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics\, Natural Sciences\, and Information Technologies of the University of Primorska\, where she has recently been promot- ed to Assistant Professor. SUMMARY:Interactive Workshop: The Lives of the Romans Through the Exploration of Archaeological Finds
DESCRIPTION:The sheltered area of Simon’s Bay attracted wealthy Romans as early as 2\,000 years ago\, leading them to build a large harbor and a luxurious Roman seaside villa nearby. Today\, the remains of this villa can be seen as part of the Simon’s Bay Archaeological Park. During a guided walk through the park\, participants will learn about the villa and some of its characteristic rooms\, become familiar with the site’s fate after the villa’s decline\, and gain insight into both the charms and challenges of archaeological work. \n\nThrough examples of various archaeological finds\, we will see what conclusions archaeologists can draw about life in the Roman period. What can objects such as a fragment of a glass bowl\, a statuette of Victoria\, a terra sigillata cup\, a brick\, or a stylus “tell” us? \nDuring the visit\, pupils also receive an educational workbook\, which they complete with the help of clues and take home with them.
