SUMMARY:What do Amphibian Abdomens and Human Fingerprints Have in Common?
DESCRIPTION:We will present a way to identify amphibians from photographs: we can identify each individual toad or newt from their abdominal pattern – just as we can identify each human from fingerprints. Sometimes\, it’s easy because toads have a distinctive pattern of black and yellow spots on their abdomen; sometimes\, it’s more challenging\, and researchers have to use different software to help them. Participants will be able to discover this for themselves with the help of the exciting game “White Urška”.\nWhy do we do it at all? Through tagging and photo identification\, we can estimate the abundance of populations of endangered groups of animals\, such as amphibians. This contributes to a better knowledge of biodiversity\, especially in the case of threatened species\, as similar methods can be used for other groups of animals (e.g. beetles\, butterflies). In the workshop\, we will also discuss the causes of species endangerment.

DESCRIPTION:Demonstration of basic resuscitation and AED procedures using simulation manikins; visitors will have the opportunity to try out the role of a rescuer. Watch a short educational video on basic resuscitation procedures and the use of an automatic defibrillator. This is followed by small group work\, where each individual tries their hand at approaching an injured/ill person and giving cardiac massage. Participants can monitor chest compressions via a mobile app. If interest is shown\, more advanced simulators and the simulation classroom itself are also presented.

DESCRIPTION:Participants will be given a short introductory lecture on the basics of kinesiology tapes and will learn more about their use in physiotherapy and their effects on a variety of pathologies. This will be followed by a practical demonstration of kinesiotaping techniques and a demonstration of the correct application of kinesiology tapes. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a creative workshop where they will be able to make their own models of kinesiology tapes and apply them to a specific segment. At the same time\, they will learn about the different types of walking aids and the role they play in the rehabilitation process of the patient. This will be followed by a short discussion on the different pathologies that often lead to the use of walking aids\, encouraging the active participation of the participants. A practical demonstration will cover the correct set-up and safe walking with the use of underarm and dock-arm crutches and a walking stick\, which will be given to the participants to try out themselves.

SUMMARY:What's Cooking in the Laboratory?
DESCRIPTION:Changes in pH can affect a variety of chemical processes\, therefore accurate determination is important for understanding the properties of substances. Red cabbage contains large amounts of substances called anthocyanins. These are water-soluble dyes that change colour in different pH environments and for that reason red cabbage can be used as a natural pH indicator. Cabbage is also a good source of antioxidants\, especially vitamin C. Antioxidants act by neutralising free radicals\, thereby preventing damage to cells and tissues. We will test the antioxidant properties of vitamin C and determine its concentration in different common food samples.

DESCRIPTION:We will present children with age-appropriate information about groups of protein-rich\, fatty\, and carbohydrate-rich foods\, as well as micronutrients and their primary dietary sources. They will learn about the general importance of these nutrients for health or primarily for the well-being and performance of children (“What is good for strong muscles/solid bones/to fight against sniffles/for good thinking of our brains?” and similar). We will illustrate the preparation of a balanced meal that they will be able to taste. They will test their ability to perceive and recognize basic tastes and smells. Within these topics\, we will debunk myths about nutrition (for example: tasting flavours with a closed nose).

DESCRIPTION:The workshop will contain three movement challenges and some myths about our bodies. \nSitting in a circle: each student sits on the other’s knees to form a circle. If the pupils are in the proper order\, they can sit on each other’s knees while supporting the one in front of them. \nIt is a mind game with the number of feet and hands on the floor. For example\, if there is a group of 10 pupils\, the instruction is given that there should be ten hands and 10 feet on the floor. The pupils arrange themselves in a way that corresponds to the instructions. The number of legs and arms can then be varied as desired. \nBall relay: the group is divided into two teams. The teams form a line. Any ball-passing games follow. For example\, the ball is passed between your legs and back over your head. \nMyths: Can you lick your elbow with your tongue? Can you lick your nose with your tongue? When can I overcome a higher load? When I exercise with my hands/feet (with both hands or feet) or if I add up the load\, I can overcome it with my left hand/foot and right hand/foot.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Detective: Uncovering the Invisible Wildlife Around You
DESCRIPTION:As part of the activity “Wildlife detective: revealing the invisible wildlife around you”\, students and teachers will learn how to efficiently monitor biodiversity with innovative approaches\, based on modern\, genetic methods. These approaches enable the understanding and research of many important wildlife features (what they eat\, what kind of environment they live in\, are their populations stable in nature\, whether are they resistant to diseases\, and how we identify the entire biodiversity in just one reaction\, etc.). \nStudents and teachers will also learn the basics of field research\, more precisely\, how can we efficiently collect genetic samples from the environment (environmental DNA) or animals (e.g. collection of hair\, faeces\, and other traces). Appropriate collection and analysis\, based on molecular data\, enable the understanding of wildlife features and are consequently important for the species’ protection and management. We will also compete in i.e. eDNA bingo\, developed by the international project Biodiversity Genomics Europe. The goal of the interactive game will be to identify unseen organisms based on the DNA sequences found in our samples.

SUMMARY:Fake News and Conspiracy Theories: How to Combat them and Protect Gender Equality?
DESCRIPTION:“Raising awareness of the interested public through presentations on fake news and conspiracy theories in the field of gender equality: Despite technological and social progress\, even in the field of gender equality\, fake news and conspiracy theories exist. Based on their characteristics\, fake news can be classified into several subgroups\, such as: false information\, which refers to inaccurate information or manipulated truth with the aim of creating sensational stories; bias\, which refers to the fact that people will prefer to share and believe fake news that is consistent with their beliefs and biases; the spread of false information through the platform\, with the help of which the information spreads faster; manipulation through which the creators of false information only want to spread it for various reasons such as political goals\, financial gain or entertainment. \nAs a well-known example\, we can take the difference in pay for the same work between men and women\, many still deny this fact and do not attach any special importance to it. In the field of science\, there is often misinformation or stereotypes about what men and women can do\, or what abilities one group and another have. Stereotypical claims are also often seen in the fields of technology\, mechanical engineering\, computer engineering and mathematics. Some misinformation often tries to relativize and minimize the magnitude of the problem of violence against women or falsely state that most allegations are false\, even though research indicates that the proportion of false allegations in cases of sexual violence is relatively low. \nWe can still find news stories and messages from celebrities stating that feminism is part of a global conspiracy to devalue traditional values and the family and place men in a subordinate position. We also witness in many cases when they use conspiracy theories to try to convince others that feminism is hostile to men and promotes the dominance of one gender over the other. That is why it is important to recognize fake news and conspiracy theories and to be able to check the source of the information\, or to find out where the information is coming from and if we have found it within a credible source that supports or refutes the stated facts. \nVarious research projects dealing with gender equality can play an important role in raising awareness. We would especially like to present the AGRIGEP project within Horizon Europe. The aim is to make the general public aware of the importance and benefits that research in the field of gender equality brings” \n[The exact date will be known later.]

SUMMARY:Critical Understanding of Media Content - Workshop for Senior Citizens
DESCRIPTION:The critical media analysis workshop will offer participants knowledge for conceptual understanding media content\, especially news. We will use the news analysis Kellner and Share model (2019). Its goal is to identify points of view\, genres\, and patterns of media representation and detect propaganda\, censorship\, and bias in the news. A group of senior citizens show low media literacy\, regularly follow traditional media\, and are not proficient in using computers and mobile digital devices; they are also a potentially vulnerable group exposed to online abuse. The workshop will show how much they are exposed to fake news\, even if they have a partially developed critical attitude towards information and other media content. \n[The event will be held by appointment.
