SUMMARY:Wildlife Detective: Revealing the Invisible Wildlife Around You
DESCRIPTION:As part of the activity “Wildlife Detective: Revealing the Invisible Wildlife Around You\,” pupils and teachers will be introduced to innovative approaches to monitoring biodiversity using modern genetic methods. These methods enable the understanding and investigation of numerous animal characteristics (what they feed on\, the environment they live in\, whether their populations in nature are stable\, the extent of their resistance to diseases\, how to identify overall biodiversity in a single reaction\, etc.). Pupils and teachers will also learn the basics of field research\, namely how to obtain appropriate genetic samples from the environment (environmental DNA) or from animals (e.g. collecting hair\, droppings\, and other animal traces)\, which make it possible to obtain a wide range of data important for the conservation\, management\, and understanding of animal characteristics. Participants will also take part in so-called eDNA bingo\, which was developed within the larger international project Biodiversity Genomics Europe. The goal of the interactive game will be to identify invisible organisms based on DNA sequences that we will “find” in our samples.

DESCRIPTION:The workshop will consist of three different movement challenges and a few myths about our body. \n\nSitting in a circle: each pupil sits on another pupil’s knees in such a way that they form a circle. If the pupils arrange themselves appropriately\, they will be able to sit on each other’s knees while at the same time supporting the person in front of them. \nA thinking game with the number of legs and arms on the ground. For example\, if we have a group of 10 pupils\, the instruction is that there must be 10 hands and 10 feet on the ground. The pupils arrange themselves in a way that meets the instructions. The number of legs and arms can then be changed freely. \nRelay with a ball: the group is divided into two teams. The teams line up. Various ball-passing games follow\, for example passing the ball between the legs and back over the head. \nMyths: Can you lick your elbow with your tongue? Can you lick your nose with your tongue? When can I overcome a heavier load? When I perform an exercise using both arms/legs (with both arms or legs at the same time)\, or if I add together the load I can overcome with my left arm/leg and my right arm/leg?

Sledi delo v manjših skupinah\, kjer se vsak posameznik preizkusi v pristopu k poškodovancu/oboleli osebi ter masaži srca. Udeleženci lahko spremljajo stise prsnega koša preko mobilne aplikacije. Ob izkazanem interesu se predstavi tudi naprednejše simulatorje in simulacijsko učilnico samo.

DESCRIPTION:Children will be introduced\, in an age-appropriate way\, to groups of protein\, fat\, and carbohydrate foods\, as well as micronutrients and their main dietary sources. They will learn about the general importance of these nutrients for health\, especially for children’s well-being and performance (“What is good for strong muscles/strong bones/fighting a runny nose/good brain thinking?” and similar). \nWe will demonstrate the preparation of a balanced meal\, which they will be able to taste. They will try identifying and recognizing basic tastes and smells. Within these activities\, we will dispel myths about nutrition (for example: perceiving taste with a blocked nose).

SUMMARY:What’s Cooking in the Laboratory?
DESCRIPTION:Changes in pH can influence various chemical processes\, which is why accurate determination is important for understanding the properties of substances. Red cabbage contains large amounts of substances called anthocyanins. These are water-soluble pigments that change color in different pH environments\, which is why red cabbage can be used as a natural pH indicator. Cabbage is also a good source of antioxidants\, especially vitamin C. Antioxidants act by neutralizing free radicals\, thereby preventing damage to cells and tissues. We will test the antioxidant properties of vitamin C and determine its concentration in various common food samples.

DESCRIPTION:Participants will receive a short introductory lecture where they will learn the basics of using kinesiology tape\, including its purpose in the field of physiotherapy and its effects in various pathologies. This will be followed by a practical demonstration of kinesiotaping techniques and a demonstration of the correct application of kinesiology tape. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a creative workshop where they can create their own kinesiology tape models and apply them themselves to a specific body segment. \nAt the same time\, they will become familiar with different types of walking aids and learn about their role in the patient rehabilitation process. This will be followed by a short discussion on various pathologies that often lead to the use of walking aids\, encouraging active participation by the attendees. The practical demonstration will include correct adjustment and safe walking with underarm and forearm crutches as well as a walking cane\, which participants will also be able to try themselves.

DESCRIPTION:In the workshop\, we will learn how the brain analyzes and integrates information about food (from the senses\, the digestive system and adipose tissue\, and from memories) into a complex perception—flavor. This then determines whether we consume the food\, how much of it we consume\, and whether we like it. No machine can replace the analysis performed by our brains\, which is why food testers (of olive oil\, wine\, coffee) are always people.

DESCRIPTION:Pop-it is a fidget toy consisting of a silicone tray in bright colors with bubbles that can be pressed\, similar to bubble wrap\, which can be flipped over and reused. They are available in various colors\, shapes\, and sizes\, and even in wearable forms. It is marketed as a stress-relief tool\, and its popularity increased in the spring of 2021 due to TikTok influencers\, as well as boredom and stress attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. SUMMARY:Can You Believe Everything You Hear About China?
DESCRIPTION:We will explore news that we often hear about China. We frequently encounter claims that can be verified with just a few clicks on a computer\, then disproved\, allowing us to learn what is really happening in China. \nFor example: People in China often eat dogs and snakes. What lies behind such a claim?\nOr: Chinese people do not have access to news because they cannot use the Google browser. Which browsers do people in China use\, and how much world news does a Chinese browser provide? \nWorkshop participants will be able to critically examine news and various claims about China themselves. Using a computer\, they will search for answers to their questions with the help of our sinologist Anja Ahčin and Chinese language teacher Xu Yidan. \nMore here.

SUMMARY:Fantastic Beasts and Where to Capture Them
DESCRIPTION:Pupils and teachers from primary and secondary schools will have the opportunity to take part in a workshop entitled “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Capture Them\,” where children will learn how to collect and use data on wildlife. The scientific application SRNA\, developed within the Step Change project and intended for collecting data on wildlife\, will also be presented. During the workshop activities\, pupils will become familiar with the principles of citizen science and learn how to record data on the presence of wildlife using the SRNA application\, as well as how to use camera traps to monitor wild animals. \n\nMore here.

SUMMARY:What Do Amphibian Bellies and Human Fingerprints Have in Common?
DESCRIPTION:We will present a method for determining the identity of amphibians using photographs: based on the belly patterns of fire-bellied toads or newts\, we can recognize each individual—just as fingerprints allow us to identify every human. Sometimes this is quite easy\, as fire-bellied toads have a very distinctive pattern of black and yellow spots on their bellies; at other times it is more difficult\, and researchers need to rely on various software tools. Participants will be able to discover this themselves through the engaging game “Bela Urška.” \nWhy do we do this at all? By using marking and photo-identification\, we can estimate the population size of endangered animal groups such as amphibians. In this way\, we contribute to a better understanding of biodiversity\, especially in the case of endangered species\, since similar methods can also be used for other animal groups (e.g. beetles\, butterflies).
